If prescribed by a physician for a medical condition, and depending on your insurance plan, they may be covered by your insurance and may be tax free.

Most Workers' Compensation insurance plans will cover these shoes in cases of valid medical necessity. Prior authorization is required and can be handled by our office. Most HMO or PPO plans pay for the shoes only in special cases, and only with your doctor's prescription and the plan's written authorization (which you need to obtain yourself)."
